The Season draws to a close.....

What a season it's been ! After beating Werribee earlier in the season we went down by 15 points in the semi-final. Disappointing but looking at the season overall it's been an outstanding success. So what's been so impressive ....

  • The Supers won 10 out of 11 home and away games

  • The Supers attracted some top players - not sure who was responsible but our list is now very capable and we rarely need to back-fill with Masters players.

  • The Masters attracted a number of recruits. The highlight being getting 20 players out to Craigieburn !!! Hopefully we'll never go back to 12-13 players at an away game. We didnt win many but we were competitive and everyone enjoyed the games.

  • A Supers finals berth - not a win but we've come a long way

  • Frosty establishes the Lions E-News newsletter - enter your email address below for next year !

End of Season Trip
Put October 17th & !8th in your diary. Dave Kruse needs to know THIS WEEK if you intend to go. A not to be missed a great weekend away with Kruser is close to closing off the books. Give him a call or email him here. Remember - Punters Club members are 'free'.

A NEW Over 47s team !!!!
Starting to feel the furious pace of the Masters is a bit too fast ? Interested in playing Over 47s ? Well Frankston are starting a new team if they can get the numbers. Here's the details....

The over 47's competition is gradually taking shape and more teams are expected for 2009 and beyond. Frankston Sharkies are seriously considering fielding an over 47's team in 2009. The feedback in the recent weeks from some surrounding clubs is that a competitive team can be established.  We would like to place an invitation to you and any players in your club that are eligible to join. We have considered the name Casey Districts (not finalised), as the predominant teams are in this district, even if your club is not the invitation to your club still applies.   If you would like further details please contact me on 0402 218 047

Club honorary positions vacant 2009
President Mott advises the President and Treasurer positions will be vacated at the end of the season. The club is looking for replacements to take up these roles.  Anyone interested talk to Motty who will be available to support the incumbents next season - don't be shy, talk to Motty this week.

2009 Fees - The New Deal
The proposal is for a one off amount paid at the start of the season (ie subs plus match fees combined into one). Further details to follow. Thanks for the feedback at training , any suggestions welcomed. Reality is it costs $$$$ to field the teams. Keep the feedback coming on this one as the club tries to come up with an outcome for everyone.

2009 Sponsorship Opportunity
As always we will be looking for sponsors , next year a spot on a new club jacket will also be available. Talk to Motty or Fitzy for further details.

Club News

So you thought you were old......
You might remember Gordon McQueen - he filled in for our Masters last year against Peninsula Raiders. Well he's now famous after a recent Herald-Sun article. And at 67 he's probably 15 years older than our oldest player. Check out Gordon here. BTW - who is OUR oldest player ?

Dont Forget our Sponsorship Deals
Special Knox Lions Discount !
Tommo (from Tomlinson Glass) has offered a 5% discount on all orders if you mention you the Knox Lions website. Check our sponsors page for contact details.

New Al's Player of the Round Award
A new deal with Al's Place Pizza means our best player in the Supers and Masters games will receive the Al's Player of the Round Award. This entitles you to a free large pizza and a can of coke. Winners will receive a card they need to present at Al's to receive their free pizza. More details on our sponsors page. (Players - please remind coaches Eddie and Bourkey if they do not award the prize after each game. )

And thanks to Frank Seton for a new team whiteboard. Should help us get our match-ups and rotations organised. Good one Franky.

Insurance

The Superules league know the chances of one of you old blokes hurting yourself is pretty high (I'm sure your wife/girlfriend has reminded you of that already) and therefore require all player to fill in a Membership Consent form. Motty has these forms and we need every player to fill one in. Bottom line is that you play at your own risk recognising your old bodies aren't what they used to be. Please see Motty to get a form if you haven't already.

Volunteers - We Need You !
Thanks to everybody who assisted last weekend at home , the games were well supported on the volunteer side by everybody at the club ,

Remember If you want to stick your hand up to help out or have any friends who want to be involved let the contacts listed below know. Anyone who can help in any way makes a big difference to the running of the club.

What is Masters Australian Football ?

      Masters Australian Football

Check out the league website

The game of Masters Australian Football (formerly known as Superules) provides the opportunity for players 35 years and over to enjoy the game of Aussie Rules Football in a safe, supportive and fun environment.

After first commencing in 1980 the sport is governed by Superules Australia Inc and its nine member state Associations and is now played by over 100 teams throughout Australia.

MAF has a national standardised set of modified rules designed to reduce the risks of injury and has the benefit of being acknowledged and supported by the AFL and the Australian Sports Commission.

Rule modifications include:

Age division restrictions
No slinging when tackling players
No knee or boot up when going in for marks
Only two up for any rucks
No barging through packs and the order off rule for any rough play

With the development of new age categories such as masterules (40 years and over) in addition to superules (35 years and over), now being played in many domestic competitions, the game is custom made for fun involvement.

You will find a welcoming atmosphere at MAF clubs with an emphasis on family involvement and fun social interaction. While a good level of fitness is required to enjoy the game fully, training runs once or twice a week without huge time commitments are the order of the day for superules. Matches are played once a fortnight.

An annual MAF Carnival in October features State and Territory teams competing across four age divisions:-

Superules      (35 years and over)
Masterules    (40 years and over)
Seniorules     (45 years and over)
Superseniors (50 years and over)

The Carnival is fun for everybody and has become one of the biggest Aussie Rules football events of the year. The big event of the year for MAF is the National Carnival which is played annually, rotating to various State venues.

There are also VicMetro Vs VicCountry once a month in the winter months for players over 45 at various venues around the state.
